GOURMET REGION PAZNAUNER ALMKÄSE

Tyrolean specialties in See in Austria

Paznaun has been counted as one of Austria's gourmet regions since 2007. The typical mountain cheese 'Paznauner Almkäse' is its flagship product, but cheese is not the region's only speciality - smoked ham, sausages or honey are also produced here.

THE GENUSSREGION ÖSTERREICH (Austrian Region of Delight) is a registered trademark, which presents the consumer with regional agricultural products and specialities on the one hand, but, on the other hand, also provides information about the specific culinary offers available in the individual regions.

By linking the produce with its regional origins and the production methods, the aim is to make the relationship between cultural environment and food production transparent.

Typical specialities for the region not only mean enjoyment, but also stand for identity and a sense of belonging. In Paznaun in particular, tourism and agriculture are closely linked to one another. Whether in the restaurants and mountain huts, where the agricultural products of the house are used, or in the Alpine huts where the menu consists solely of home-made specialities.

These strong links are clear down in the valley, above all due to the Paznauner Almkäse, which can be bought in the mountains and in numerous grocery shops.
Paznauner Almkäse is made exclusively from raw milk, of a cheese making quality from cows grazed on valley and Alpine pastures, alone. The mature, pale yellow cheese with its pea-sized holes has a flavour which ranges from mildly aromatic to piquant. Cheese lovers can enjoy this regional speciality as an extraordinary cheese delicacy after a maturing period of six weeks.

Ultimately, when tasting this exquisite product from the Paznaun mountain pastures, our guest not only receives a piece of the best cheese but also a little bit of the Tyrolean cultural landscape.
